GAMS

GAMS (short for Geisteswissenschaftliches Asset Management System) is an asset management system for the storage and administration of digital resources produced in a scientific context. It supports the electronic dissemination of research data and related metadata, with special emphasis on the arts and humanities.

Since 2003, the Center for Information Modelling in the Humanities at the University of Graz has been involved in the research on theoretical and applied issues of digital archiving and edition and – contributing to an Open Source initiative at the Cornell University (FEDORA) – implemented an ambitious project for the management of digital content:

GAMS has been designed and developed in cooperation with multiple partners inside and outside the University of Graz, with regards to the specific requirements of humanistic research. Thus, a pool of re-useable content from different humanistic domains is collected. The system is entirely based on XML and XMLtechnologies and consistently implements the XML paradigm of separating content from form (beyond metadata). By designing so-called Content Models, the system can easily be adjusted to specific scientific demands and usages.

The purpose of the GAMS project is to establish and continuously develop a data repository for scientific content, and to ensure the long-term preservation, access to and reusability of the content in different usage scenarios.
